Updated with Trekking with Children and Landfall's info about water treatment. Is there anything else that needs adding?

FYI: I am in contact with the SteriPen people (they replied quickly ) and will have more info soon -- am awaiting answers to my followup questionsSORRY I didn't update 'til now! Here's the deal about my minor troubles with SteriPen: To remind all: I found the SteriPen worked great (with good research behind it) and I had NO stomach issues. My minor problem was that it gave me problems on the "1 litre" settings so I had to do the "0.5 litre" twice (with no problems). As I expected, STERIPEN folks confirmed that doing the "1 litre" once versus the "0.5 litre" twice was effectively the same as it is all about duration of exposure to the UV [Actually, in my view, because I shook up the water after the first 0.5 litre exposure, it was likely even better than a single 1 litre exposure] Why did it do this? The Steripen has sensors that require some electrolytes. (Their manual indicates that super clear water such as glacial lakes may not have enough elecotrolytes and their solution: add a timy pinch of salt or sugar -- or even spit in it) But I had the problem in definitely non-glacial sources (Salpa-Arun trek). So it turns out my sensor is set too high -- I tried their suggestion (salt first -- it worked; then yucky spit -- it worked) - 1 litre setting worked fine!SteriPen offered to re-calibrate my steriPen, but I think I'll keep it as is as I know it works (indeed, used it last weekend in our local mountains). To conclude: I am pretty happy with my SteriPen. I Last edited by Landfall38; 2nd September 2009 at 08:40 AM. |

I thought this might interest everyone as a common question is about what the weather might be doing at a given time in the Everest region.
You can now see for yourself in real time by hitting this link for the New Everest Webcam. Happy Trekking Rob |
